A stadium in Petersfield, Hampshire, United Kingdom, was the scene of an unusual competition: a lawnmower race. The vehicles alone may seem strange, but these drivers must compete in a 12-hour race overnight – from 8:00pm to 8:00am the next morning to be exact.
As tradition dictates, pilots associate themselves with style Le Mans. Drivers climb into their trusty lawnmowers and engage in a 12-hour high-speed race.
“It's about getting the steering angles and everything right. Making it [cortador de relva] Strong enough to break and kill you. And then it's about making it flexible and light enough to be really competitive,” explains Gareth Moore, one of the racing drivers.
The sport originated in 1973 after an Irishman named Jim Gavin came up with the idea of running a lawnmower race.
The principles of conventional car racing apply to this invention: drivers race around the circuit, take turns behind the wheel, and make pit stops for refueling and other necessary repairs. There are three pilots per team, and each team can have as many crew members as they want.
The 12-hour race will return next year.
