Urgent: Health confirms the first case of monkeypox in Acre

The Health Department of Acre (Sesacre), through a technical note, confirmed the discovery of the first case of monkeypox in the state. The results of two examinations of suspected cases arrived from the Ezequiel Dias Foundation in Minas Gerais on Monday, 25, and one of them was positive.

In a document, Sissachar reports that the 27-year-old patient traveled abroad and upon his return had fever, physical fatigue and papules spreading to the arms and abdomen, and was notified on the 11th by Unimed. “His condition is progressing well, with few symptoms, he is being monitored by the Rio Branco Ministry of Health and the State Epidemiological Surveillance. Previously, four other suspected cases were excluded.

Monkeypox is a disease caused by a virus and transmitted through close contact with a person who has skin lesions. According to Sesacre, this contact can occur through hugs, kisses, massages, sexual contact, or respiratory secretions. Transmission also occurs through contact with objects or fabrics (clothing, bedding, or towels) and surfaces that an infected person has used.

There is no specific treatment, but in general, the clinical pictures are mild and require care and monitoring of the lesions. The greatest risk of exacerbation, in general, occurs for immunosuppressed people with HIV/AIDS, leukemia, lymphoma, malignancy, autoimmune disease, transplant recipients, pregnant and lactating women, and children under 8 years of age.
