According to the Ministry of Housing and Communities, the number of applicants as of Tuesday morning reached 88,712 students. “The UK stands with the Ukrainian people”said Michael Gove, Minister for Housing and Communities, praising the UK for “supporting the most vulnerable during the darkest hours”.
Goff admitted he hoped the scheme would expand “quickly” after criticism of the government’s response to the refugee crisis sparked by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Ukrainian refugees participating in this initiative will be able to access the National Health Service and other public services, while children will be able to attend local schools.
There is no limit to the number of Ukrainians that can be covered in this program as the British government will pay the equivalent of €415 per family that takes in a refugee. Participants are not required to provide for food and living expenses, but they can, if they wish.
Anyone who has the means and can apply online in order to provide free space in their home or in separate housing for at least six months. Participants will be screened and local authorities will verify that the accommodation offered is suitable, according to the evening criterion.
The municipalities will also be funded, and will receive the equivalent of 12,000 euros per refugee for support services. The Minister for Housing and Communities says the British people are “in awe of the courage of the people of Ukraine”, adding: “Victims of indiscriminate and unjustified brutal aggression, their courage under fire and their determination to resist inspire our absolute admiration”.
Representative Lisa Nandy expressed concern about the “lack of urgency” and acknowledged that the visa application process could be easier. “We can carry out the necessary checks, but we eliminate excessive bureaucracy,” he explained.
