Hello Tom! Thanks for talking to us. my pleasure. Can you tell us the story of the second single from your album, Gravitational?
Tom Chaplin: I think it’s actually a love song. It is a song written from the point of view of experience [risos]. I’ve been in the same relationship for nearly 20 years, have two kids, a house we’ve lived in for 15 years… I’ve had these aspects that have been a part of my life for a long time and I believe they are my physical and spiritual home. The people and the place. I am always attracted to them. The song talks about how even when I felt so far from these things, I also felt a force pulling me towards them. I think life is very mysterious and there are things we cannot explain or understand about our existence as human beings. When we have relationships with other people or when we’re in love together in our homes, that’s where it all makes sense, right? And I think we all need it. This song is about that strength that makes me come back to the ones I love and that makes me feel centered and normal.

What can fans expect from your new album “Midpoint”?
Tom Chaplin: It’s an album about that stage of life [meia idade]. I guess it’s not something that gets talked about a lot because it doesn’t seem to be the subject of many pop songs. [risos]. When I think about it, I think John Lennon talked a little bit about it in “Double Fantasy,” with some songs that talked about this point in our lives. But really, I can’t think of any album to do with that. It’s a phase in life that I’m clearly in now and everyone is either going through it or going through it. Young people will eventually go through this stage as well.

It is that stage in life where many questions are presented to you. It’s when you wonder about everything you’ve built, the life you’ve built for yourself, and you ask yourself: Am I happy with all this? Or do I want to destroy everything and start over? Falling in love with someone else? Do you have more children? Buying a silly car? Escape to Australia? People can do crazy things at this point in life. Some people live with these issues, but they have the opportunity to look at what they have and see that it is something very special that needs nurturing and acceptance. The album is all about that. About dealing with middle age and this stage I am now. And also about the idea that at the end of it, there is something very liberating and very beautiful. I think there’s honesty in that as well as the way the recording looks.
It’s an album that’s not full of noise. It’s very dynamic, and I hope it’s very beautiful. It was recorded the old fashioned way, live, with all the musicians in the same room. Not hidden behind a large production. It’s just real. This is what people can expect. Very honest compositions and songs. I wanted it to be one of those albums where people put on headphones and take the time to listen to it, allowing themselves to immerse themselves in it. For me, it’s not an album that you can play in the background. You need to delve into it. That would be my advice, but people can do whatever they want [risos].

How has the pandemic affected your creativity or even this album?
Tom Chaplin: I don’t know. In fact, it is very difficult to know whether it has been affected or not. I started writing these songs when the pandemic started, but I guess I was going to start writing them anyway because I was ready. Because a few years passed I had no inspiration or desire to compose. Suddenly, everything started to flow and it happened at the same time as the epidemic. She definitely gave me the time and space to make this album. But I think I’ll write anyway.

As a songwriter, do you see a difference when you write for Keane than when you write your own songs?
Tom Chaplin: That’s the big difference for me because the compositions in Kane are Tim’s responsibility [Rice-Oxley]. This is how he sees his role within the band. This works fine. I have always been the voice of these songs. This dynamic works well for Ken, but for me, personally, I need my own outlet and a space where I can really have my own voice. I think that’s what individual work allows me to do. It’s very exciting, by talking in a creative way, in a way that Kane doesn’t. What’s exciting about Ken is the performance part and being able to sing such great songs. That’s really cool, but not the creative part. This is what I love about making solo albums: the ability to fully immerse yourself in the creative process and record songs. It’s very hard to beat that’s why I constantly want to set individual records. As I get older, I probably like it more than live performance.

I’ve been to Brazil and been to one of those shows, which I did with Maroon 5, in 2012, a long time ago! Can we expect offers from your solo career here?
Tom Chaplin: Fabulous! I hope that! But individual work is more difficult because it is too costly for everyone. It’s a case of being able to make it work financially. It’s a boring, non-technical way to talk about it [risos]. But it is the practical method. I hope that sometime next year I will be able to go to Brazil to perform these songs. Energy in South America is simply different. There is so much passion and love for live music in a way that you won’t find anywhere else in the world. I really want to come back and sing these songs for you. But if it doesn’t, I’m sure I’ll be back with Ken later.

Would you like to send a message to the Brazilian fans?
Tom Chaplin: Thank you for many years of support! Thank you for your passion for music. Speaking of this album, I would encourage people to take the time to listen as quietly as they need to. Listen with headphones, relax and immerse yourself in it. It’s the way it should be.
