Holy Houses of Mercy currently account for 40% of hospitalizations of moderate complexity and 61% of hospitalizations of high complexity in the Unified Health System (SUS). The data was presented by the Minister of Health, Nicia Trindade, during an official session in the House of Representatives in honor of the National Day of the Holy House of Mercy, on Tuesday (15).

During the hearing, Nísia cited Bill 1435/22, which provides for the periodic review, in December, of the remuneration schedule for services rendered to the SUS. The text, under analysis in the House of Representatives, requires a sufficient update to maintain the quality of service and the economic-financial balance of the contracts. “I reiterate here our commitment and the importance we attach to the sector,” he said.

“A nearly 500-year-old tradition for a sector that was once the only access to care and health for most Brazilians, especially before the unified health system came into force,” said the minister. “In many places, having Santa Casa was the only way to get there,” he added.

“The Ministry of Health not only understands this centrality, but also reiterates its serious commitment to the work of each of you,” he stressed. “We will continue this work alongside the sector, with the Brazilian Parliament and with the support of the entire government led by President Lula so that the sector has conditions for sustainability, working together on proposals for better management.”

During the session, Nicia also mentioned what she described as the losses during the COVID-19 pandemic and the central importance of the Holy Houses of Mercy in this process. “My father himself contracted Covid, fortunately it did not develop into a severe condition, and he was helped in Santa Casa de Misericordia de Santo André (SP), where he lives. Each of us has a personal story to tell about the importance of the sector.”

“The ministry had one of the main points in its structure in President Lula’s government to resume the national coordination capacity of the SUS. This coordination is impossible without dialogue and joint action with all sectors that support our unified health system,” he said.

“I reiterate our commitment to strive for the best forms of sustainability and progress towards a resilient SUS and towards strengthening our system. Santas Casas perform a socially and politically relevant function, being responsible for providing basic services to the population, and historically also working to counter social inequalities.”

The president of the Federation of Santas Casas de Misericórdia, Hospitals and Charitable Entities, Mirócles Veras, evaluated the current moment as one of the complete transformation of health in the country, but particularly sensitive to the charitable sector. “On National Holy Houses Day, we don’t expect mercy,” he said.

We aim to acknowledge our history and value our mission and significance. In this way, what we bring is not just requests from the sector, but a real agenda of commitment to the health of Brazil, ”he stressed. According to Veras, the charitable network includes 1,804 hospitals across the country and employs more than a million professionals.

It provides the ability to deal with a country with serious problems of concentrating aid resources in the most developed centers. In nearly a thousand municipalities, small and peripheral charity sanitary equipment is the only alternative to serve the population.

Data indicates that the network provides a total of 175,225 beds, including more than 20,000 intensive care units (ICU) annually, in addition to performing more than 5 million hospitalizations, 1.7 million surgeries and more than 220 million outpatient visits. In 2022, 67% of oncology procedures were performed in charitable entities, which were also responsible for 71% of the 6,700 transplants registered in the country.
