“The flute at the gates of dawn”. This is the literal translation of the title of Pink Floyd’s audio work, released in 1967. The production is the band’s only work made under the leadership of Syd Barrett, who left the band after having problems with chemical dependence.

With psychedelic and experimental elements, the group’s debut album was inspired by the children’s literary work “O Vento nos Salgueiros”, and is considered one of the pioneers of the “art rock” subgenre, where guitar and keyboard influences prevail with experimental song effects. The album reached number six on the bestseller list in the UK and number 131 in the US.

Lyrics can be described as original and pure, from the times when music could not only be heard, but felt in almost tangible movement, where the dynamics and events within one track were constant and impressive, for example from this is the “Smoldering” track.

In some pieces of music, as in “Matilda Mather” and “Bow R Talk H,” you can be fascinated by the onomatopoeia and harmonic use of instruments to complement the sounds that surround the songs, turning the whole work into a beautiful and unique blend.

The book that inspired the work tells the story of four anthropomorphic characters who lived in rural England. Mysticism, adventure, morals and camaraderie are the values found in all seasons.

To complete the main narrative, the literary work contains several short and independent stories, introducing rats and moles into various adventures. One of the excerpts called “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn” tells about the search for the lost son of an otter. With the help of the god Pan, the deity of the forest, they finally find the cub. God Pan is known to live in caves and roam in mountains and valleys. He is fond of music, always has a flute.

On the album, long spaces with only instruments, no vocals, take our imaginations to another dimension. Words about fairy tales, bicycles, gnomes (as we can hear in track 8 “The Gnome”) and scarecrows, added to the psychedelic sound, give the necessary touch to explain the mysterious and adventurous side of space that is limited to people who dive in. In this masterpiece called “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn” we will understand.
