Ômicron in Brazil: Six cases are under observation and nine are suspected in the variant that emerged in South Africa Daniel Roberts/VEJA

The first preliminary data on those infected with the omicron variant, coming from Gauteng province, South Africa, and the United Kingdom, suggests that there may be escape for those vaccinated, but the trend is that cases are mild. According to the UK’s Health and Safety Agency, out of a group of 22 people, only six have not been vaccinated.

In Brazil, the first data on the six Brazilians infected – three in Sao Paulo, two in the Federal District and one in Rio Grande do Sul – was also optimistic. On Saturday 4, the Ministry of Health informed that everyone had already been vaccinated and had mild symptoms.

However, health authorities are acting with caution, as there are still no studies that effectively show the extent of Omicron’s resistance to Covid-19 vaccines, and continue to closely monitor infected Brazilians and other suspected patients. According to the file, there are nine cases under investigation, six of which are in the Federal District and Rio Grande do Sul.

To date, the World Health Organization records cases of the new variant in about 40 countries, but there is no record of deaths from this strain.
