'Animals', Pink Floyd's 'Misunderstood' album gets a new mix. Listen!
After much discussion, finally, the new mix of “Animals”, Pink Floyd’s tenth album, was released. The remix was supposed to be released in 2018, a year after its four-decade anniversary, but the feud between Roger Waters, songwriter and singer over all but one, and David Gilmore, guitarist and owner of “Pink Floyd”, delayed the album’s arrival to Shops.

Gilmore was reportedly unhappy with the biographical notes written to accompany the work and objected to the release. Waters even posted the script to his official website last year, adding to the tension that has surrounded musicians since the 1980s – Waters left the band in 1983, shortly after “The Final Cut” was released, believing it signaled the end of a group. Gilmore didn’t think the same way and decided to move on, which led to a major legal dispute that ended with the guitarist winning.

“Animals” is seen as something of an “ugly duckling” on the band’s most commercially successful stage. It comes after “The Dark Side Of The Moon” (1973) and “Wish You Were Here” (1975) and is certainly one of the darkest works of the progressive giants. With the theme of Animal Farm commenting on the political climate in the UK in the mid-1970s, the record is clearly not easy to listen to.

The LP also saw a definitive shift in the group’s gears, with Waters taking complete creative control over it. If he even acts as “I Wish I Were Here” as the lead, but makes room for Gilmore and Richard Wright (and to a lesser extent drummer Nick Mason) to contribute as well, he’ll end up in The Animals. For this recording, he wrote and sang on four of his five tracks, “The Dogs” being the only one to feature Gilmore on vocals.

“Animals” apparently sold well, with an estimated 12 million copies sold worldwide, but far fewer than the two previous, and subsequent works (“THe Wall” for which Waters was also the absolute leader of the project).

Live, the band didn’t visit him often either. After his release tour, in which all his songs were shown in LP arrangement, he was never revived in front of the audience.

Waters, in his solo shows, usually plays his songs, but always in a calculated way. On their current tour, only “Sheep” is on the set.

All this makes Animals, which has never been so beloved by critics, although this opinion has changed over the years, proves to be an album ready to be listened to again, or even heard for the first time. This remix, which gives more clarity to the performances, but does not radically change them, is a great invitation to the band’s fans to do it ASAP.
