The two-year partnership is expected to help FareShare secure 475 tons of surplus food and redistribute more than one million meals. The program will help grow the award-winning surplus through a purpose fund, which will cover the cost of diverting farmers’ harvests and wasted food.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimates that food waste contributes 8% to 10% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, so dealing with food waste is a pressing issue. Funding will directly help agribusinesses by reducing the environmental impact of food waste through interventions to harvest surplus fresh produce such as fruits and vegetables. Over the next 24 months, for every tonne of surplus Fareshare and AAF food redistributed through this project, around 1.6 tonnes of embodied CO2 could be saved and 3.8 tonnes prevented from alternative and harmful disposal.
“As a foundation, our support for the FareShare Surplus Food Program comes at a critical time and aligns with AAF’s vision of preventing and alleviating hunger. We look forward to meeting the food needs of vulnerable families while addressing climate change at both ends of the food chain by addressing food waste,” AGCO said. said Roger Batkin, chairman of the board of the Agricultural Trust.
The AAF-funded Surplus Food Program contributes to four 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: zero hunger, health and wellness, climate action as well as responsible consumption and production. The project will provide food to thousands of vulnerable people, tackle food waste to address the impact of climate change, improve overall well-being through access to good nutrition and provide a scalable solution to food recovery.
“We must never waste good food, especially in the midst of a cost of living crisis. Millions of people are struggling with the rising cost of food, fuel and housing bills. We have seen the impact of rising food demand on our network. FareShare is grateful to AAF for extending its funding to the UK at this critical time. This partnership will help us expand our reach and make a significant difference in getting surplus food from farms to people’s plates,” said Lindsey Boswell, managing director of FareShare.
