Subjecting your hair to straightening procedures using chemical products, a common practice today, can pose more serious risks than it seems, according to a study conducted by the National Institutes of Health in the United States. Research highlights that continued use of these products is associated with an increased risk of uterine cancer.

The study, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, revealed that women who regularly use these cosmetic products are more likely to develop the disease compared to those who do not use them. The trial included monitoring 33,497 women, between the ages of 35 and 74, to understand the potential harmful effects caused by the chemicals, with a particular focus on uterine cancer and other health conditions.

Women who reported frequent use of these products, more than four times a year, were twice as likely to develop endometrial cancer as those who did not use these products.

This study joins other related research that highlights the potential consequences associated with hair products and other personal care items that increase the risk of cancer and other health problems. Previous research by the same team had already concluded that hair cosmetics and permanent dyes could increase the risk of breast and ovarian tumors.

Importantly, all of these findings are based on self-reports, leaving room for potential inaccuracy. Therefore, it is always recommended to consult a dermatologist before using any product that comes into contact with the skin or scalp.
