WhatsApp, on Wednesday (11), announced a new feature that allows transferring conversations from an Android phone to an iPhone (iOS) and vice versa. According to the company, this was one of the most requested functions by users of the platform.

The feature is intended to facilitate the transfer of conversation history from the application when the user changes the mobile operating system.

The functionality will launch in the coming weeks for Android initially, and for Samsung’s latest Galaxy phones, running Android 10 or higher. According to the company, expectations are that the feature will also be available for iPhones soon.

All WhatsApp messages are end-to-end encrypted by default and stored on the device. As a result, migration of WhatsApp chat history across platforms requires additional work from WhatsApp, those responsible for mobile operating systems and device manufacturers.

“We are excited to be able to make it easy to securely transfer WhatsApp chat history from one operating system to another for the first time. This has been one of the most requested features by users for years, and WhatsApp has worked closely with operating systems and device manufacturers to deal with it,” said Sandeep Paruchuri, Product Manager at WhatsApp.
