A woman underwent a womb transplant for the first time in UK history. The operation took place in February at Churchill Hospital in Oxford, where her 40-year-old sister, who already had two children, donated her womb.

A 34-year-old woman was born with Meyer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome, and therefore without a uterus. It should be noted that the syndrome consists of a rare disease in which the woman is born with an underdeveloped uterus or fallopian tubes or without the former.

Richard Smith, one of the chief surgeons, said the operation, which took more than nine hours and involved more than 30 staff, was a “huge success”, according to the newspaper. Guardian. “I think this has been the most stressful week of my surgical career, but it’s been incredibly positive. Both the donor and the recipient are over the moon,” he commented. The body is expected to last a maximum of five years, after which it must be disposed of.

The woman’s ovaries are still functioning, which means she can get pregnant with fertility treatment. The recipient is planning to have two children and therefore wishes to undergo insemination In laboratory testing mode Until the end of the year.

So far, ten surgeries have been approved, including with brain-dead donors and five with living donors. A second operation is already planned for next fall and future recipients are in the preparation phase. In other parts of the world, such as Sweden, Germany or the United States, similar procedures have already been carried out.

The possibility of an ovarian transplant opened a window of hope for all women whose organ had failed or had to be removed. Second Richard Smith, “20 to 30 [mulheres] per annum” may benefit from this practice in the UK in the future, provided that the donation is made by the survivor.
