The UK is not far behind efforts by the European Union (EU), Asia and North America to lead the race in artificial intelligence: it wants to invest €117 million to buy advanced chips for artificial intelligence (AI) systems.
According to The Telegraph, the British public organization for research and innovation (UKRI) is in talks with semiconductor manufacturers Nvidia, AMD and Intel to buy chips specifically designed for AI.
In fact, media reported that the British government’s negotiations with US-based Nvidia to order 5,000 units are already at an advanced stage, and that these semiconductors will be used in a new research center focused on AI. Summer 2024.
In addition, the UK will spend a further €117 million to set up a dedicated task force to assess the safety of generative AI models such as SatGBT and BART. In fact, the government is evaluating the possibility of developing its own chatbot for public services.
