Britain has imposed 14 new sanctions in response to “Russia’s attempts to destroy Ukraine’s national identity”, 11 of which it said were linked to the forced transfer of children. They will be subject to asset freezes and travel bans.

“In his appalling plan to forcibly deport children and the hate-filled propaganda spread by his minions, we see Putin’s (Russian President Vladimir) true intent to wipe Ukraine off the map,” British Foreign Secretary James Wisely said in a statement. .

“Today’s sanctions must hold those who support Putin’s regime accountable, including those who want to see the destruction of Ukraine, the dissolution of its national identity and the destruction of its future.”

Last month’s package of EU sanctions included responsibility for “forcible transfers and deportations of Ukrainian children and persons responsible for the looting of Ukraine’s cultural heritage.”

England says many of the children have been sent to re-education camps “to be exposed to a Russian-centric educational, cultural, patriotic and military education”.

Earlier this month, Russia said it had taken some 700,000 children from conflict zones in Ukraine into Russian territory for their own protection.
