Eager to expand its line of beefy Land Cruiser SUVs, Toyota could take a new step towards a true model family. A patent filing conducted in Japan revealed that the Land Hopper name could be used by the Japanese brand for a potential competitor to the Jeep Renegade.
According to the Japanese website The best carThe new chunky SUV will be built on the TNGA-B platform, the same platform used in the Corolla and Corolla Cross. It could even be a mid-size model, a closer competitor to the Ford Bronco Sport than the Jeep Renegade.
However, the point is that the model has an old-fashioned style and a very square body, just like an entry-level all-wheel drive Jeep. The idea is that it will have a hybrid version that uses the 1.8 engine from the Corolla Cross and also the 2.0 hybrid engine that the Corolla has in Europe. It is also possible that a 100% electric version of the Land Hopper will appear later.

Where will you be?
The big question will be the position of this model within the Toyota range. Today the brand has the C-HR compact SUV and Yaris Cross (in two very different variants) competing in the entry-level segment. The Toyota Renegade may be the most expensive model at this level.
Another possibility is to attack the medium SUV segment, filling the gap that exists in some markets between the Corolla Cross and the RAV4. The advantage of the Land Hopper is that it will have an off-road footprint inherited from the Land Cruiser, while the Yaris Cross, C-HR, Corolla Cross and RAV4 The current one does not have any off-road career.
