The Information Commissioner’s Office, the UK regulatory body, fined TikTok in the millions after accusing it of illegally using children’s data and consequently breaching data protection laws.

According to the organization, children under the age of 13 are using the platform in 2020, and the platform rules state that such use is prohibited for minors under that age.

TikTok receives R$80 million fine in UK; The reason is understandable

According to a survey by the Information Commissioner’s Office, around 1.4 million children have had their data used, and in the United Kingdom, the Protection Act only allows this to be done with the consent of parents or guardians.

The company also claims that TikTok failed to do enough verification to prevent children under this age from entering the platform.

“Laws exist to ensure our children are as safe in the digital world as they are in the physical world. TikTok does not comply with these laws,” said John Edwards.

However, John Edwards, the UK’s information commissioner, says the children’s data may have been used to track them. Sharing inappropriate content can harm their growth.

Understand the penalties imposed on TikTok

TikTok must pay 12.7 million pounds, which is roughly R$80 million, for failing to comply with the country’s rules. The penalty would have been even higher if the regulator had decided to pursue charges of illegal use of special categories of data.

If so, the site could be fined £27 million, more than double the current fine. Apart from the illegal use of data, TikTok has yet to provide information about its data collection, which intensified the court ruling.
