The spread of the “gunpowder mosquito” has affected more than 100 residents. The Ministry of Health has not yet issued an alert or directive.

A few weeks ago, a resident of Lumiar presented symptoms such as sudden fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, muscle and joint pain, symptoms that initially resembled dengue, Zika or chikungunya. However, after a visit from a team from the Undersecretary of Health Surveillance, on Thursday 4, he received the results of the hand tests carried out by the team with the diagnosis of Oropoche fever. This disease is also caused by the “Maruyum” or “Pulvora mosquito”. This will be patient zero, the first patient to be diagnosed in Nova Friburgo. Other residents of the area have also presented similar symptoms. According to information obtained by the portal, there have been more than 100 people.

According to sources from EcoSerrano portal, the Department of Health is also planning to set up traps to catch mosquitoes and reduce the presence of the insect in the area. EcoSerrano searched the city hall’s social media for any official warning notice and guidance regarding the presence of the insect and the potential outbreak in the area. Apparently, no official guidance has been provided.

What is known about Oropouche fever?

Oropouche fever is an acute viral disease caused by the Oropouche virus (OROV), transmitted mainly by the bite of mosquitoes of the genera Culicoides and Aedes. It is endemic in tropical areas of South and Central America, such as Brazil, Peru, and Trinidad and Tobago. Symptoms include fever, severe headache, muscle and joint pain, as well as nausea and vomiting. The infection is usually self-limited, but can cause localized epidemics. Control measures focus on mosquito control and personal protection from mosquito bites.
