Finance Minister Fernando Haddad announced, on Monday (5) Debt renegotiation program for Brazilians with minimum wage income. The initiative will be valid for debts acquired up to the last year.

The Ministry of Finance expects that 70 million Brazilians will be served by the two measures. Fernando Haddad classified the initiative as a “program dealing with the pandemic”.

He added, “This is the maximum that the program can reach. It is clear, I repeat, that it will depend on the commitment of the two parties, because it is a government program that depends on the rapprochement between the two sides.”

“The program depends on the commitment of the creditors, because the debt is private. We understand that the creditors will want to participate in the program by offering good discounts precisely because of the liquidity they will receive because it will be guaranteed by the Treasury,” he said.

“We have been placed under the umbrella of FGO, which has approximately R$10 billion in resources, to guarantee negotiated loans,” he said.

Debts of up to R$100

According to Fernando Haddad, the Creditors who choose to participate in the program will have to clear the names of defaulted consumers who owe up to R$100 “immediately.”. The minister explained that 1.5 million Brazilians have debts of this amount.

“Any creditor who wants to participate in the program, will have to repay the debt that pays the debts of those who have R$100. The idea is that he immediately removes the name of the SPC, Serasa, in order to qualify to participate in the program.. That is our goal.”

“We can put 1.5 million Brazilians in a better position if this ban on applicants is abolished,” he said.

After the press conference, the Ministry of Finance clarified that The obligation to liquidate the name of negatives that owe up to R$100 is valid for banks only. That is, this condition does not apply to retailers and water and light companies.
