Russia welcomes Türkiye's desire to join the BRICS group

According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, the Turkish nomination will be evaluated at the next meeting of the bloc.

Today, Tuesday (June 4, 2024), Russia expressed its support for Türkiye's interest in joining the BRICS group. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced that the Turkish nomination will be discussed at the next meeting of the group, which already includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Ethiopia, Iran, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates.

Turkey's intention to get closer to BRICS was highlighted by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan's visit to Beijing, the highest-profile visit by a Turkish official to China since 2012.

According to the agency ReutersFidan met with Wang Yi, the Chinese Foreign Minister, and other officials, demonstrating Turkey's interest in strengthening relations with the bloc. At an event held at the Center for China and Globalization, Fidan expressed Türkiye's desire for membership. “We would of course, why not?”.

He also indicated that he would attend next week's BRICS meeting in Russia, the official news agency reported Anatolia.

It is not yet clear whether Türkiye will take formal steps to join BRICS. As a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Turkey has been criticized by its Western allies over its relations with Russia. But Ankara rejected these accusations, stressing its commitment to the alliance and its goal of obtaining full membership in the European Union.
