The United Kingdom to implement the third dose against Covid-19
On Thursday (1) the government decided that UK residents should receive their third dose of the vaccine against Covid-19 before winter sets in in the country. The goal is to protect more people over 50 years of age, young adults with comorbidities and those living with people with autoimmune diseases.
According to the European Sky News, the Vaccination and Immunization Committee explained that the boost will be important to maintain herd immunity and prevent the spread of new variants and this will be done in two phases.
The first aims to vaccinate 15 million of the most vulnerable groups across the UK, including people over the age of 70, healthcare professionals and residents of nursing homes. Phase two will extend to an additional 17 million people, including people over 50 and young people with comorbidities.
After the target audience receives the third dose, there will be an evaluation by experts to see if it is necessary to extend the boost to the rest of the population.
The country uses the AstraZenec, Pfizer and Moderna vaccines to vaccinate the population and is one of the most advanced in immunization, with 85% vaccinated with at least one dose and 62.4% with two doses.
