The document was signed by federal representatives from the Novo Party, Adriana Ventura (Novo-SP), Gilson Márquez (Novo-SC), Marcel Van Hatem (Novo-RS), and Senator Eduardo Girão (Novo-CE).
According to party representatives, these include “social groups and movements, as well as extreme leftist entities, such as the Movement of Landless Rural Workers (MST), the National Confederation of Rural Workers, Farmers and Family Farmers (CONTAG) and the Displaced Workers (MTST).”
The party questions the criteria used by Lula's government to select these groups. All those selected will benefit from a budget of R$ 23.7 million to train popular agents, who will work to promote the SUS system in communities in need. The AgPopSUS (Popular Health Teachers and Educators) Training Program was created in August 2023 to train grassroots agents to promote the SUS program in communities in need, in partnership with social movements. Tasks range from visiting families to promoting vaccination measures.
According to the program announcement, there will be 400 classrooms, each with teachers and 20 students nominated by the movements. Each teacher will receive R$2,500 for the six-month course, while students are entitled to a cost allowance of R$480 each. Movements are entitled to R$6,000 for each group they coordinate.
The Health Ministry said in a memo sent to the press that the selection was not based on political criteria. “The selection of popular social movements is done exclusively on the basis of the criteria set out in the memo,” the ministry said, adding that their actions would be monitored.
The ministry added: “It is up to the Ministry of Health to ensure that the selected social movements comply with the goals and requirements specified in the notice, which includes submitting academic and administrative documents and reports, in accordance with the agreed-upon periodicity.” .
