    Understanding the initiative

Based on a project carried out by the UK Department of Health, about 1,300 elderly people will receive robotic “pets”.

    Millionaire investment

The proposal, estimated to cost £1 million, aims to help combat loneliness, stress and anxiety in old age.

    Tests in the United Kingdom

According to the daily Mail, The 'pets' will keep elderly pensioners company through trials in Milton Keynes, Luton and Bedfordshire.

    What are robots like?

Like stuffed animals, the “dogs” and “cats” are equipped with motors that allow them to move their heads and wag their tails.

    Other purposes

The initiative also aims to help older people communicate after stroke, dementia and learning difficulties.

    Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Another goal of the project is to develop AI-powered facial scanners to identify signs of pain.

    Contributing to mental health

Studies have also suggested that having “robot pets” can reduce neuropsychiatric symptoms, such as depression, apathy and anxiety, as research from the University of Plymouth has shown.
