According to ANS, operators in the sector made a profit or surplus of R$1.3 per R$100 of actual revenue in the period

The complementary health sector recorded a net profit of R$ 2 billion in the first half of 2023. The data for the period was published on Friday (September 1, 2023) in the accounting dashboard maintained by the ANS (National Agency for Complementary Health) in its online portal.

In figures aggregated by sectors, the net result was positive for all: benefit managers reported a profit of R$260.6 million; Exclusively dental operators R$327.4 million; And the medical hospital is 1.46 billion Brazilian reals.

The main aspect explaining the performance of medical hospital operators in the sector remains the loss percentage, which closed the semester at 87.9% (about 0.9% lower than the percentage verified in the same period of the previous year).

This finding was strongly driven by some of the largest operators in the country and shows that approximately 88% of revenue from monthly fees is “spent up” on assistance expenses.

“We are of the opinion that operators’ profitability generally comes from income generated from financial operations. This situation is undesirable because, at the end of the day, the plan process must be sustainable in itself. So operators need to review their management and analyze what they can improve. It is important To do a more proactive actuarial study, analyzing potential scenarios and impacts.“, says Director of Standards and Qualification of Operators, Jorge Aquino.

The percentage of losses recorded in the first two quarters of 2018 and 2019 was about 84%. The high post-coronavirus loss ratio levels (as of 2021) can be explained by the slow recovery of plan revenue, especially from large operators.
