    During the study, researchers analyzed the eating habits of a sample of 13,500 individuals, aged between 37 and 73, living in the UK. None of these individuals were diagnosed with depression at baseline. Five years later, 1,100 cases of depression had been identified, either through medical diagnosis or use of antidepressants.

    The results, published in the Journal of Clinical Nutrition in July 2023, showed that moderate consumption of peanuts was associated with a 17% lower risk of depression. Moderate consumption is equivalent to 30 grams per day.

    “Longer-term clinical trials should evaluate whether peanut consumption is an effective strategy for preventing depression in adults,” notes Bruno Bezzozzero Peroni, who led the research.
