Next Monday, July 24, there will be a symposium on “Financing the UK’s NHS and Care Services”. The meeting will take place from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, in a hybrid format, with face-to-face activities at the UFRJ Institute of Economics. There will be simultaneous interpretation and it is not necessary to register in advance to participate.

The NHS, which for decades has been the benchmark for quality, efficiency in public health and universal provision, even influences the design of our own SUS, is now on the brink of collapse. Structural changes in forms of financing, public-private partnership contracts, outsourcing of services, and austerity policies encouraged the so-called financialization of the system. The same process is now also reaching the care economy, driving up costs and degrading services, leading to a powerful process of concentration and centralization in the hands of financial groups indifferent to the demands of the general population. This has led to a sharp deterioration in health indicators and living conditions in the United Kingdom.

To further discuss the topic, two specialists, Kate Bayliss (University of Sussex and SOAS – University of London) and Jasmine Gideon (University of Birkbeck), will participate in the symposium, moderated by Francisco Foncia (Head of ABrES). Additionally, the schedule includes Lena Lavinas (IE-UFRJ) as a discussant for the launch Q&A.

The event is being promoted by IEI/UFRJ, in partnership with ABrES, Abrasco, Desid/Sectics/MS and ENSP/Fiocruz.
