Abrasco – Associação Brasileira de Saúde Coletiva – with its board of directors and partners, expresses its appreciation and condolences to Professor José Eluf Neto, who passed away on January 14, 2023, as a result of an aggravation of lung cancer and complications.

José Elof Neto graduated in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of São Paulo (FMUSP) in 1974, after training in Internal Medicine at Hospital das Clínicas (1977), after which he was awarded a Master’s degree in Preventive Medicine (1985) by the same faculty. He obtained his PhD in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine – University of London (1993).

He attended FMUSP College, reaching full professor level in the institution. His academic performance was marked by epidemiological studies of tumors, a subject in which he was responsible for training a large number of researchers.

The FMSUP issued a note highlighting his “always boisterous, high-pitched presence, speaking loudly across the aisles wherever he goes, always very active.” […] A character passionate about what he did, always with deep feelings…”.
