A three-year-old boy has been diagnosed with the virus The cause of polio. The case was registered in Santo Antonio do Toa, Pará. According to information from the state’s Department of Public Health (Sespa), it is a positive Sabin-3 virus-like result – collected in stool – which is still under investigation.
The type of virus detected is not wild poliovirus. Despite the result, other hypotheses, such as Guilin-Barré syndrome, are not excluded. The Secretariat informed that the case would continue to be investigated, as recommended in the Ministry of Health’s Epidemiological Surveillance Manual.
Sespa assures that it will provide all necessary assistance to the patient recovering at home. The Ministry of Health has also been notified and is following up on the case.
The Ministry confirms that “there is no record of a viral outbreak of polio in Brazil”
Early in the evening on Thursday (6/10), the Ministry of Health published a note to the press stating that “there is no record of a viral outbreak of polio in Brazil.” According to the file, a team from the ministry has been sent to investigate the case in Para, which is being treated as acute flaccid paralysis. “The Ministry of Health has reported that there is no record of viral circulation of polio in Brazil.
The file sent a team to Para State on Thursday (6) to investigate the case of acute flaccid paralysis. According to the information sent by the State Department of Health, the case may be related to an adverse event resulting from inadequate vaccination. It is important to note that this is not polio.
The Ministry of Health assures that parents and guardians vaccinate their children in all indicated doses to keep the country protected from polio, a disease that has been eradicated in Brazil.“

Data from the Secretariat show that the record of the last case in Brazil was in 1994, in Paraíba. The adoption of mass vaccination campaigns helped eradicate the disease.
Although the vaccine is available, vaccine coverage has shown below the 95% target since 2016. The recommendation is that all children under five should be vaccinated according to the routine immunization schedule and in the annual national campaign.
