Against the background of the protracted process of Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, Macron recently raised the possibility of creating a European political community, in which Kyiv, in the face of a Russian invasion, would be welcomed quickly into the European space, in a proposal that divided European leaders.
Today – in response to a question at the debate on “Portugal and the future of European institutions”, organized by the Portugal International Club – Santos Silva admitted that this solution could, among other answers, allow for a rapprochement between the United Kingdom and the European Union, after “Brexit”.
The former head of Portuguese diplomacy defended “this hypothesis is possible (…). The European political community would be where a certain return of the United Kingdom to the territory of the European Union could be made fairly easily”. .
“However, it is very important to bear in mind that this European political community, whatever it may become, is not the European Union itself,” Santos Silva added.
And Augusto Santos Silva concluded: “In this sense, and because of my knowledge of British society, I do not believe in such a profound reflection of the decision that was taken freely, the decision to leave the Union.”
