LONDON, Feb 17 (Reuters) – Prince Philip, 99, the husband of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, was admitted to hospital Tuesday night as a precaution against an illness unrelated to the corona virus.

The prince, whose official title is Duke of Edinburgh, has not been hospitalized for a short period of time, according to a royal source.

“Duke’s permission is a precautionary measure on the advice of his Royal Highness physician, in the event of ill health,” Buckcomb Palace said in a statement.

Felipe is at King Edward VII Hospital in London, where he is expected to spend a few days in observation and rest. The source said he did not have a COVID-19 related illness.

The 94-year-old queen is staying at Windsor Castle near London, where the couple is staying during the British Corona virus outbreak. Both received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in January.

Felipe has not appeared in public since retiring from his official involvement in August 2017. He was admitted to the hospital in late 2019.

The Greek-born former naval officer has been hospitalized several times over the past decade, including treatment for infection in 2017 and hip replacement surgery.
