The fire that destroyed the Dalton Mills Building, an old factory in West Yorkshire, England that had been converted into a recording studio for popular UK soap operas, was considered a crime by British police, and five people were arrested.
A West Yorkshire Police Department spokesman said: “Police are treating the Dalton Mills fire as a crime.” Five were arrested and the investigation is still ongoing.”
The big fire, which began at noon on Thursday (3/3), required 20 teams of 100 firefighters to fight.
The site was the largest textile mill in England, with a capacity of 2,000 workers in 1869, and currently serves as the setting for attractions such as “Peaky Blinders” and “Downton Abbey”.
Richard Knight, chief executive of Screen Yorkshire, called the fire “a sad loss for the Yorkshire film scene”. The person in charge of the space administration told the BBC that the loss was irreparable. “It was one of those wonderful places that represented an era in itself. It had the kind of grandeur and scale that even attracted filmmakers from other countries.”
