The Paraná Institute of Technology (Tecpar) wants to expand the list of countries that accept the report of the anti-rabies serology test on pets, issued by its laboratory. Currently, tests conducted by Tecpar are accepted in 27 member states of the European Union, four in the United Kingdom, as well as the United States, Switzerland, Norway, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates. Now, the institute is focusing on obtaining accreditation in Japan. The process with the regulators in that country is already under way.

Submission of an exam report is mandatory for Brazilian travelers who wish to take their pets (dogs, cats, ferrets) with them on international trips. The tests are performed by the testing laboratory in the laboratory of Tecpar’s Quality Control Department, the same place where the quality of the rabies vaccine produced by the institute is monitored.

Tecpar director Celso Clos notes that the implementation of the service has solved a longstanding request from veterinarians from Paraná, who previously needed to order the service at laboratories in other states. “In addition to reducing logistical costs by sending samples, the possibility of testing in Paraná reduced the time to hand in reports, making life easier for educators, clinics and veterinarians, who often have to run out of time to submit documentation,” he says.

Now, the institute is seeking to apply with new accreditations, so that the report will be accepted in more countries. Tecpar was the first laboratory in the south of the country approved by the United States and the European Union to carry out this type of test, which began its implementation in June 2021.

legal requirement – Brazilian travelers who wish to take their pets abroad need to implement a series of procedures and comply with legal requirements for the boarding and transportation of animals, depending on the destination country.

It is essential to inform yourself in advance, as each country provides for different documents, deadlines, and rules. Among the requirements are microchipping, parasite treatment, immunization, anti-rabies sera, health certification, and obtaining an International Veterinary Certificate (CVI), among others.

Documents required by the United States and the European Union are available on the Tecpar website. Click here to access.

Step by Step – The World Health Organization (WHO) specifies that travelers who wish to bring their pets to countries that require International Veterinary Certificate (CVI) have their animals tested and submit a rabies serology test report. The document proves that the animal that received the rabies vaccine in Brazil was already vaccinated and produced antibodies to the rabies virus.

For this, the guardian must contact a veterinarian, who will advise on the necessary actions, order an examination to a qualified laboratory, and also subsequently provide a certificate of animal health. The test sample must be collected at a veterinary clinic or lab.

international accreditation – Tecpar received its first international license, in 2021, from the European Union. To obtain accreditation, it was necessary to pass a proficiency test organized by the French agency Anses-Nancy, the reference laboratory of the European Union.

The institute was also the first laboratory in the Southern region to be certified to perform serology testing on companion animals for the United States of America. Permission was granted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).Centers for Disease Control and Prevention – CDC), an agency of the US Department of Health and Human Services.
