Champagne is a word that defines two things: a region in France And one of the types of wine produced in the same place. Its location is northwest of the country's territory.

Thus, in the world of beverages, the word is a controlled designation of origin for sparkling wines produced only in that French region. This happens precisely to distinguish it from the rest of the sparkling wines found in the world.

Other French regions cannot even use this name in their drinks, according to the Brazilian Oenology Association. This part of the country has a cool climate and soil with the right characteristics for growing the right grapes (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier).

Origin of champagne

The emergence of the drink is more about discovery than creativity. It dates back to the 17th century, when the Catholic monk Dom Pérignon (1638-1715) became interested in reports from local producers about bottles of certain types of wine exploding on their own.

This is because it ferments again after being bottled. The cleric had to find a solution to the problem, by adopting a cork tied with wire, to take the first steps towards the emergence of champagne.
