Wales, one of the four nations that make up the United Kingdom, will appoint its first ever black governor this Saturday (16/03) after its Economy Minister Vaughan Gething was elected as the next Labor leader. The 50-year-old politician said it would be an “honour” to become the British nation's first black leader next week. “Today we turn a page in our nation's history. A history we wrote together,” he told Labor party members in Cardiff.

Gething will succeed 69-year-old Mark Drakeford as party leader who announced his resignation in December. The Labor Party rules a devolved administration in Cardiff, and Gething is expected to be sworn in as prime minister on Wednesday. “His appointment as First Minister of Wales, the UK's first black leader, will be a historic moment that reflects the progress and values of modern Wales,” British Labor leader Keir Starmer said in a statement.

Gething was born in Zambia to a white Welsh father and a black mother from this African country. Once sworn in, the heads of three of the UK's four governments will be non-white. The country's Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is of Indian origin, while Scottish Independence Prime Minister Hamza Yusuf's parents immigrated from Pakistan.
