A big comeback by American Frances Tiafoe over Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas on Sunday was awarded the world’s first Laver Cup team, with a 13-7 victory over the European team.
Tiafoe beat Tsitsipas in two sets to 1, in parts 1-6, 7-6 (11/9) and 10-8, in an hour and 46 minutes of the match.
With an 8-4 loss on the scoreboard earlier in the day, the rest of the world team managed to turn the score around thanks to two wins for Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, first in the doubles alongside Jack Sock against Matthew Perrettini and Andy Murray, and then against Novak Djokovic in the singles .
Tiafoe completed the work even before the final duel in the championship, between the Norwegian Casper Rudd and the American Taylor Fritz.
On the last day of the Laver Cup, each win equals three points, unlike Saturday, when it equaled two points, and Friday, which counted with only one point.
This particular counting method was used more by the world team, with three straight wins on Sunday, allowing the score to shift.
Europe had won the first four editions of the tournament, which will remain in memory of this occasion by hosting Roger Federer’s farewell, last Friday, in the doubles match alongside his friend and rival Rafael Nadal.
