The underwater robot “Run” has mysteriously disappeared beneath the ice of Antarctica, after discovering an unprecedented underwater icy landscape. The whereabouts of the equipment, which is located at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, are currently unknown. But the maps it created have been studied and have revealed discoveries about the melting ice at the planet's south pole. The information is from globe.

The submarine was deployed in 2020 to explore the Doomsday Glacier, one of the world’s largest ice deposits. However, in January 2024, the equipment lost its signal and disappeared, but not before leaving behind maps of what it had found beneath the glacier.

According to National Geographic, the RAN mission was scheduled to dive into a cavity in the ice shelf, traveling more than 1,000 kilometers beneath the glacier. Data obtained by the submersible revealed that the glacier is melting faster in areas where underwater currents are eroding the base. There is also evidence of advanced melting in ice cracks.

However, one of the most surprising discoveries was the subglacial landscape with peaks, valleys and dune-like formations. Scientists from the Swedish university believe these formations are caused by water flows influenced by the Earth’s rotation.
Platforms, according to National Geographic, are essential to the stability of glaciers, acting as barriers that prevent ice from melting and flowing toward the sea. Without them, ice would melt faster and could lead to sea level rise.
