Jamie White shows his class to reach the last 16 in Germany

Jimmy White came back in time to defeat Peng Yisong 5-1 and reach the last 16 of the German Masters.

A former Masters and Great Britain winner, White has hit five half-centuries to earn a piece of history at the Tempodrom.

This made him the first player aged 60 or over to reach the last 16 in a ranking event since Eddie Charlton did the same in 1992 at the British Open.

White, six times world runner-up, started with a break of 55, and although Peng managed to equalize immediately afterwards, the Chinese made a costly mistake in frame three when the rest of the fielder hit the pink.

White claimed a close third frame and never looked back with breaks of 82, 63, 50 and 70, sending the veteran to face Jack Lisowski next.

“I really enjoy playing and I just want to compete,” the 60-year-old told the World Snooker Tour.

“I’m fighting to stay in the ring, on my roster for the year, but I need to dig deeper into this tournament, Welsh or the new tournament they’re going to be in. Knowing I’ve secured my place is going to take a lot of pressure off me.

Lisowski, runner-up in Berlin two years ago, beat Zhang Anda 5-0 with his 117 break along the way.

Tian Pengfei outlasted Anthony McGill 5-1 and will face Tom Ford next.

Ford was defeated after losing to reigning champion Zhao Xintong, one of four players who were supposed to participate in the tournament who are currently suspended due to ongoing match-fixing claims.

World No. 8 Kyren Wilson traded a safety to take past Sam Craigie 5-2.

Elliott Slessor beat Joe O’Connor 5-2 and will face Xiao Judong, who defeated Fan Chengye in a decider.
