    New rules for charging electric vehicles have been approved by the European Parliament, changing several factors such as payment methods, speed and charger availability. The UK is changing payment methods, but using a different mechanism.

    As EV sales continue to grow, charging station operators are working hard to install chargers along major routes in their respective countries. The race created several technical issues with the technology, such as charging issues, non-fast charging in some areas and questionable safety chargers.

    New measures imposed by the European Union

    In an effort to remedy these shortcomings, the European Union has proposed a number of measures to improve the consumer experience, including:

    • Change in charging, now from 400kW to 600kW every 60km;
    • In 2028, the minimum power should be increased to 600 kW;
    • Trucks and buses got different rules, requiring charging points every 120 km with 1.4 MW to 2.8 MW of electricity.

    The new rules require a simpler way to pay – eliminating the need to download apps or register. Meanwhile, by 2027, the EU will create a public database with information on charging stations such as availability, waiting times and prices for all networks.

    UK works on station reliability

    With a different focus, the UK proposes to provide 99% safe charging stations. Furthermore, a 2017 study found that 15% of EV charging stations in the UK were down. That number has fallen to 8% in 2019, but the UK estimates this number will drop to 1%.
