Englishman of Angolan descent intends to run for office in the United Kingdom

In the May 5 municipal election, Angelo Costa lost by a three-vote margin at the end of February in the by-election of ‘Labor’ candidates for the Ladenstone ward area in the Municipality of Waltham Forest, London.

However, he told the Lusa news agency: “The interesting thing is that the majority of members who have the power to choose the next deputy candidate have told me that they would like to consider running for office in Leighton and Wanstead or Singford and Woodford. Green Blocks.”

With the Assembly elections only scheduled for May 2024, the candidate selection process is not yet scheduled, but they represent another step in political life as Angelo Costa, of Angola descent, wants to go as the first person to be elected to the United Kingdom.

Born in Luanda, Angelo Eduardo Costa Menkovo ​​lived in Portugal for almost a year, immigrating to the United Kingdom when he was 8 years old, always living east of the British capital.

He has been active in politics since childhood, studying law and pursuing a master’s degree in political science, joining Vocal Communities in 2020 and working with academics, politicians and organizations to promote the political representation of minorities.

“I live in the Waltham forest, and I noticed that most of the people are of African and Asian descent, but the representation in the municipality was very low. On the contrary, in Stratford’s neighboring municipality, white Englishmen are a minority,” he explained.

The initiative, supported by SOAS University and Banco Santander, has an officially recognized teaching program that teaches students about political structures and seeks to impart authority to backward communities.

“We already had five students selected locally, which gives me hope that in three-four years there will be more at the national level, but in the future, Europe, Africa and Asia,” Costa said.

After participating in several political campaigns, Angelo Costa gained his first experience as a candidate in 2018, losing by 500 votes in the Larkwood local election, a regional constituency dominated by the Conservative Party Waltham Forrest.

Recently, he was hired by 89up, a communications company that clients NGOs against humanitarian or anti-racism, to help mobilize young people.

At the same time, the company appointed Claude Moraes, a member of the European Parliament between 1999 and 2020, director of European affairs.
