British chocolate replaces plastic packaging with paper

Mars, one of the brands chocolate Produced by Mars Global Incorporated, a pilot project that replaces plastic packaging with recyclable paper began on Monday, the 29th. The change has been rolled out to 500 Tesco stores in the UK United kingdom.

“Our goal is to redesign our packaging so that it is circular, and to work so that all of our packaging is recyclable, reusable, or compostable,” the brand said on its website. Current packaging is not recyclable, as are many items, including snack wrappers.

According to the BBC, the change in packaging follows the chocolate competitor Nestlewhich has been using paper packaging for Smarties since January 2021 and in some Quality Street candies since December 2022. Nine of the 11 traditional Quality Street candies have switched to paper packaging.

Nestlé’s move marked the end of plastic packaging for the first time since its launch in 1936. Only Orange Crunch and Green Triangle chocolates remained in their aluminum packaging, as they can now be recycled.

According to Mars, this is a limited test in select Tesco stores over the next few months. The new packaging features a recycle symbol which means the package can be placed in the trash as is. The brand has also stated that the paper selection is in line with UK Packaging Label Recycling (OPRL) guidelines, as it can be “extensively recycled” across the UK.

Mars Incorporated produces, in many countries around the world, brands such as Twix, Snickers and M & M’s, as well as services in other sectors, such as pet care, with its Pedigree and Whiska brands.
