Wimbledon, United Kingdom, July 3, 2021 (AFP) – Tennis player Matteo Berrettini, ranked ninth in the world, qualified this Saturday, as well as in 2019, to the round of 16 at Wimbledon, by defeating Slovenian Aljaz Biden (Position 64) by 6. 4, 6-4, 6-4.

On Monday, the 25-year-old Italian will face Belarusian Ilya Ivashka (79) or Australian Jordan Thompson (78) to try to reach the quarter-finals for the first time. His best result in a Grand Slam tournament so far was the semi-final that Rafael Nadal lost at the US Open in 2019.

Berrettini, who won the Queen’s title just before Wimbledon, beat Biden without difficulty. He relied on his superb serving (20 aces with no double faults, 2 break points counted but neither), great forehands and offensive play that was effective overall (38 wins vs 23 non-compulsive fouls)

The results of the sixth round of Wimbledon:

Simple male (third stage):

Matteo Berrettini (ITA/N.7) x Biden Jazz (SLO) 6-4, 6-4, 6-4

Ilya Ivashka (BLR) x Jordan Thompson (Australia) 6-4, 6-4, 6-4

Lorenzo Sonego (ITA/N.23) x James Duckworth (Australia) 6-3, 6-4, 6-4

Hubert Hurkacz (Poland / No. 14) x Alexander Bublik (CAZ) 6-3, 6-4, 6-2
