Today, Monday (30), the Venezuelan Supreme Court of Justice suspended the results of the vote organized by the opposition to choose a presidential candidate.

On the 22nd, more than 2.3 million people voted in the primaries to choose the sole candidate of the political opposition to Chavismo in the presidential elections scheduled for 2024. The winner was María Corina Machado. This vote was organized without any participation from the Venezuelan government.

The Venezuelan Attorney General’s Office says it is investigating the primaries and the organizers of the vote for electoral crimes, financial crimes and conspiracy. The organizers made statements to the public prosecutor’s office on Monday.

The country’s government claims that there has been fraud since the day of the vote.

Both the Attorney General’s investigation and the Supreme Court’s suspension of the results are decisions taken in the case brought by Representative Jose Brito. According to Al-Adl, he wanted to participate in these primaries, but he did not belong to any of the parties that organized the vote.

The Supreme Court’s suspension is not final, it is only valid until there is a final decision on the case brought by Brito.

The United States gave a statement regarding the suspension

The United States will “take action” if Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro fails to adhere to the agreement reached with the opposition, a US State Department spokesman said on Monday (30), after Venezuela’s Supreme Court suspended “all effects” of the opposition primaries.
