Ground zero for the epidemic in Italy, a city Codogno
Tuesday (15) marked the first day without new cases of COVID-19 recorded since February 2020.
The announcement was made by the mayor of the Italian municipality, Francesco Passerini, after a daily update from the Health Care Agency (ATS).
“This has not happened since February 20 last year. We have been following the situation for several days, waiting to reach this achievement, which is another step towards normal life,” said Passerini, stressing that “this is a dream” expected for nearly 16 months.
Codogno is located in Lombardy, with a population of 16,000 and detected the first internal transmission cases of Sars-CoV-2 in Italy, in the early morning hours between February 20 and 21 last year.
The city was closed on the 23rd, including a curfew, and remained in this position until 8 March, when Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte issued a decree imposing restrictions on movement in Lombardy and in provinces in other regions.
Since then, Italy has accumulated 1,27,101 deaths and 4,247,032 cases in the state of health emergency, but it is in the process of easing restrictions measures.
