Several celebrities, including singer Katy Perry and former footballer David Beckham, from the Group of Seven, which will meet this weekend in the United Kingdom, have asked to share coronavirus footage with the poorest countries.
Celebrities from the world of entertainment and sports sent an open letter to the governments of the Group of Seven (the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Canada, the United States and Japan), requesting that at least 20% of the vaccine stock be allocated to poor countries between June and August, equivalent to 150 million doses.
The celebrity message reads: “The world has spent a year and a half fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, but the virus continues to spread in many countries and produce new variants, with the risk of sending us back to where we started.”
“This means more school closures, more interruptions in medical care, and more economic consequences that threaten the future of families and children everywhere,” the text adds.
The signatories, who include several UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors, are Liam Neeson, Orlando Bloom, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Whoopi Goldberg.
Singers Katy Perry and Angelique Kidjo and sports stars such as Sergio Ramos, pilot Fernando Alonso and tennis player Andy Murray also signed the letter.
The G7 summit will take place in the United Kingdom on Friday.
