Passengers travelling through Bristol Airport are facing delays after an overnight closure disrupted flight operations. The airport temporarily suspended all activity following the discovery of a runway defect, with services restarting after safety checks and repairs were completed.

Bristol Airport Suspends Flights Over Runway Issue

Operations at Bristol Airport were halted on the evening of Friday 7 August after a defect was identified on part of the runway.

The closure was described as a precautionary measure, allowing airport teams to inspect the affected area and carry out necessary repairs before flights could resume.

Bristol Airport confirmed that services restarted at 8am on Saturday 8 August, although disruption was expected to continue throughout the day as airlines worked to recover from the overnight interruption.

Passengers Warned of Up to Two-Hour Delays

In an update issued after operations resumed, Bristol Airport warned passengers that flights could face delays of up to two hours.

The airport advised travellers to check their flight status with their airline before heading to the terminal. Passengers who had been scheduled to travel on Friday evening were also encouraged to contact their airline directly for updated information.

The disruption affected all flights operating from the airport, with airlines expected to provide individual updates regarding revised departure times and possible schedule changes.

Safety Checks Completed Before Restarting Operations

A Bristol Airport spokesperson said the decision to suspend flights was taken to ensure passenger and aircraft safety while the runway issue was assessed.

“Due to a defect on the runway, we have temporarily suspended operations as a precaution, in order to inspect and repair the section affected,” the spokesperson said.

“We apologise for any inconvenience. Safety is always our number one priority. Customers should refer to their airlines with any flight queries.”

Travel Disruption Expected to Ease Throughout the Day

The airport said the temporary closure was necessary to allow maintenance teams to address the runway problem safely. While flights have resumed, delays are expected as airlines manage the backlog created by the overnight suspension.

Passengers travelling from Bristol Airport are advised to allow extra time for their journey and remain in contact with their airline for the latest updates.

The incident highlights the importance of routine airport safety procedures, with runway inspections and repairs carried out as a priority whenever potential operational risks are identified.
