    UK retail sales fell 1.2% in June compared with May, according to estimates, after rising 2.9% in the previous month, the ONS, the Office for National Statistics, said this Friday (19). The analyst consensus had estimated a slight drop of 0.6% on a monthly basis.

    Sales volumes fell in most sectors as department stores and apparel retailers returned to Q1 levels.

    British retail sales have now fallen by 0.2% in the year to June and sales are 1.3% below pre-Covid-19 pandemic levels in February 2020.

    Sales volume fell 0.1% in the 2nd quarter compared to the previous quarter and was down 0.2% compared to the 2nd quarter of 2023.

    In June, “out-of-store” retail sales, which include online sales, stalls and markets, fell 1.1%.

    Non-food stores – department, clothing and home stores – fell 2.1% in June after rising 3.3% in May.

    Food store sales fell 1.1% in June compared to the first three months of 2024 and 1.3% in the 2nd quarter, mainly at supermarkets, affected by poor weather and economic conditions, creating caution among consumers.
