Flights continued as usual at Reykjavik Keflavik Airport, according to the airport's website.

The event highlights the challenges facing Iceland, with scientists warning that recurring eruptions could occur in Reykjanes for decades or even centuries.

Wednesday's eruption was the eighth since 2021 on the peninsula, where about 30,000 people live, after geological systems that had been inactive for 800 years became active again.

The volcanic activity disrupted urban heating, closed major roads and flattened several homes in the fishing town of Grindavik, where only a handful of residents have returned since their evacuation in late 2023.

Police said Iceland's Civil Defense was placed on high alert, and authorities again ordered the evacuation of Grindavík.
