LONDON (United Kingdom), 05/21/2024.- British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak prepares to deliver a speech outside 10 Downing Street in London, Great Britain on May 22, 2024. He announced early elections with polling date on July 4. 2024. (Elections, United Kingdom, London)

Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak It announced on Wednesday (22) that the Legislative Assembly elections will be held in UK will take place on July 4th – not next year as planned. Opinion polls suggest that the Labor opposition, led by Keir Starmer, will win the election. Also, the Prime Minister dissolved Parliament. “Today I spoke to His Majesty the King to request the dissolution of Parliament. “The king has accepted this request and we will hold a general election on July 4,” Sunak announced in the rain outside his official residence in Downing Street. If the Conservatives are not elected, the United Kingdom will have its fourth prime minister in two years.

This decision was taken after the cabinet meeting. The elections, due to be held by January 2025, were brought forward due to pressure on Sunak, exacerbated by unfavorable opinion polls for the Conservatives. Polls show a 20-point advantage for Labor with 45% voting intentions, compared to 20%-25% for the Conservatives. The anti-immigration party Reform UK appears to be aiming for 12% of the vote. With simple voting in each of the 650 constituencies, the numbers represent a comfortable majority for Labour.

The Conservatives have been in power for 14 years, marked by the Brexit referendum and a succession of five prime ministers in eight years. Good economic news, including curbing inflation and implementing a plan to expel irregular migrants to Rwanda, appears to have prompted Sunak to call for elections. The English, however, appear determined to turn the tide in favor of former barrister Keir Starmer, 61, taking over No 10 Downing Street.
