Journalist Julio Magalhaes, 61, of CNN Portugal, has asked to voluntarily withdraw from his activities as a news anchor at the channel due to his “unavailability at work,” according to a statement from TVI, part of the Media Capital group. The departure takes place after a search and seizure warrant is executed for his property, as part of Operation Maestro. The investigation focuses on the name Manuel SerraoPresident of Associação Selectiva Moda, who will be a partner of Magalhäes.
The group has obtained the right to approve EU-funded projects aimed at promoting companies through events such as fashion fairs, film festivals and photography competitions. However, 14 of them are suspected of fraud and embezzlement of nearly 40 million euros. According to the Portuguese Judicial Police, the scheme was based on the creation of complex business structures to justify contracts financed with public funds, as part of the Operational Program on Competitiveness and Internationalization (POCI), between 2015 and 2023. A personality in Portuguese media, he has nearly 40 years in newspapers, radio and television, including state-owned RTP, the Porto Canal television network and Rádio Observador.
