The United Kingdom and Norway announced additional cash to fund Amazon this Monday (11). Together, the two countries will increase their contribution to forest conservation activities by R$450 million.
Norway will also donate US$50 million (about R$245 million). The United Kingdom will contribute 35 million pounds (R$215 million). The announcements were made during the UN Climate Change Conference COP-28, which runs until December 12 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
During a panel celebrating the 15th anniversary of the Amazon Fund, Norwegian Climate Minister Andreas Bjelland Eriksen announced the increase in contributions, along with Brazilian Minister of Environment and Climate Change Marina Silva.
Norway, the fund’s main donor, had already announced last year that it would return to making transfers after the election of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT). Since 2018, when Jair Bolsonaro was elected, Norway has stopped donating.
Following allegations of irregularities and removal of the Amazon Financial Guidance Committee (COFA) and its Technical Committee (CTFA), Amazon Funding was suspended between 2019 and 2022. New donations to the mechanism also stalled during that period.
In its 15 years, Amazon Fund received R$3 billion from Norway. This year, the fund received R$110 million from the German government, and signed an agreement to contribute about R$500 million from the British government, R$30 million from the Swiss government and R$15 million from the United States. Whose total donation was disclosed was approximately R$2.4 billion, with no defined timeframe.
