A “technical failure” affects the UK’s air traffic control network, causing significant delays to flights, including from Faro.
The UK’s National Air Traffic Control Service (NATS) said on Monday it had to restrict flights in British airspace. A spokesman for the organization said, quoting Reuters: “We are currently facing a technical problem and we have applied restrictions on air traffic to maintain safety. Engineers are working to find the problem and solve it.”
NATS did not provide an estimate of how long these restrictions would last, nor did it explain the cause of the technical issue.
European air traffic authority Eurocontrol has already warned of “extremely significant” delays due to the failure.
In the early afternoon, several planes had been waiting to land for more than an hour. British airspace is not closed, but there are strong restrictions.
